I have been looking at this in a store i go to frequently. Today the
Priced dropped to something i could afford for something i have no idea what it is.
The wood frame is 21 1/2" square
The piece is mounded to burlap.
The front is glass with the four straps holding it on the frame.
I'm not sure if some of the feathers have moved around or if it is supposed to look like that?
can anyone tell me what it is and or did I waste $20.00?

I think it is someone's art project - a circle of tapestry weaving, decorated with pheasant feathers and yarn fringe.

I also don't recognize it as anything other than an individual art project. Kinda cool tho. After you found gold in the trash, don't consider it money wasted!

wHETHER OR NOT IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THAT, NO ONE WILL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE -- LET ALONE CHOOSE TO ARGUE ABOUT IT.

(Oops! sorry! Didn't realize I was in caps.)

Thank you all very much. Since it doesn't seem to be something special I am going to fix it up and get the feathers off the weaving. Maybe get my $ back.

GreekAntiques "Wisdom begins in wonder." Socrates

If it is not too late, or too little, it appears to be an Anatolian kilim fragment in the center. I am in agreement with the others, otherwise!

A few well lit closeups of the weaving, particularly the edges where colors change, would help us identify the technique more precisely.

How interesting! Nobody has commented on your latest photos. I hope they do.

Sorry - I have been busy, and running up against data limits, so photos have not been loading.

I don't see anything in the technique that argues for it being part of a kilim. In kilims, which are a type of tapestry weave, vertical color changes are made by wrapping the yarns around adjacent warps (rather than interlocking around a single warp). This results in distinctive slits between the changing colors. This is not the only defining feature of kilims (and not exclusive to kilims) - design elements and yarn types being other factors.

While your piece does include a few slits at color changes, the artist seems to have deliberately avoided vertical color changes, favoring stepped design elements. You may be right that it is an abstracted face, which would not be typical of traditional kilims from the Middle East, where geometric designs are most common.

I still think your piece is simply an individual artist's work.

There appears to be a glitter effect in the brick(?) coloured part of the weave. That isn't seen in traditional rugs.
