I was given this chest or box, or whatever it is years ago by my grandmother, but she didn't tell me anything about it. If anyone can help, I'd like to know how old it is, what it is, and possible value. It measures 12 inches high, 11 deep, and 15 wide.

    Thanks,
    Frank

What does it look like on top? I don't see that angle in a picture....

Edit: Maybe give us a pic of it closed up.

The outside top is plain, smooth wood, with a small ring-shaped dark stain.

I believe it's an antique marquetry table cabinet. Typically they're
Italian or German. The one below is German.

Is the flat piece sticking out in front below the lowest level drawers the same piece that folds up to cover the drawer fronts?

It is. The lid lifts, and has a hasp, the front panel also opens as you see in the photos.

I keep thinking there must be a hidden compartment.
Are the drawers as deep as the chest?

I'm pretty sure this is not sixteenth century mainly because of the screws used on the hinges. Screws were not commonly used in furniture until the early 18th century. I would guess this is from the mid 18th century. :)

The Sotheby's box I supplied a link to had some pretty major restoration work with the sides being re veneered. I wonder if it is possible that this one has also had a few screws added to stabilize the hinges at some point? Merely speculation on my part. I would love for Frank to send some pics to Sotheby's or a similar place and let us know what they had to say..... :) I did not know about those and my heart has a new desire now. Maybe I could ask Santa in a couple of months...:hilarious:

Yes, the drawers are as deep as the cabinet. Sorry, no hidden compartment.
