What brand is this 1930s(?) dining set?

Discussion in 'Furniture' started by lookingforadiningtable, Apr 22, 2021.

  1. This set is oak and seems to be 1930s era based on comparable photos.

The only label is not very helpful.

it has two 12” leaves that allow to table to extend from 36” to 60”, and is 33” wide. It has floral or fruit engravings on the chairs and table.

Anyone have any ideas on what brand this might be, or any history on it?

    Welcome!

Many more people will look at your photos if you post them here. Lots of folks are reluctant to click on outside links, especially when they're posted by someone new.

(Note for the cautious: when I checked just now, LFADT's photos really did show furniture!) EDIT: While I was typing, INH has helped OP by posting the photos here.

  5. Thanks! I couldn’t figure out how to get them small enough to work here!

Would you show us "the only label" please? Pre WW2 American furniture is often unmarked.

Don't believe this to be American. Spelling of color as colour supports that this is from the UK.

Well, that's not particularly helpful, is it?

Because it has a place that says "Maker's No(?)" I think this was more likely from the retailer than a maker.

Perhaps a closeup of the carved detail on the table legs might help?

Agree on Verybrad's "not American" call. It may be extremely difficult to name a maker on this, as there were literally hundreds of manufacturers across the world and most did not label their wares in the 1930s.

The chairs look part Arts and Crafts and part 1950s, but trestle tables didn't get popular in the USA until the 1970s. So I'm no help whatever. The label does imply it's British. Could we be looking at unusual G plan? The light maple is more 1950s than 1930s.

Looks a lot like British maker E. Gomme (who later made G Plan) sets from the 30's but I scanned their old catalogs online and didn't see this exact style, though a couple very similar ones.

This is an english draw leaf table isn't it? Often called "pub" tables here, these were hot once upon a time with city apartment dwellers and sold for good money especially if matching chairs were included. Not sure how they are doing now.
