Western Union telegraph call box help

I can't find this number 4-A, that's on the back. The ones I'm finding are like 4-B, or 6-B, etc.
So, it's either rare, (wink, wink, ha, ha), or I just don't know how to search very well.
Would the 4-A help to date it as well?

How does that work? What does it do? Should there be a handset attached?

 

It's up your alley AF. It has a sort of clockwork mechanism. Triggering it sends a preset code.

 

Something like a burglar alarm? Or nightwatchman's box?

 

I think usually used by a business to call WU to pick up a message

 

I went to Google. Typed in Western Union 4A call box and one came up (Not much additional info)

I doubt if you could sell it on ebay, they don't allow Western Union.

 

I stand corrected. The one in the link is different than yours.

 

I did find 2 of the 4-A in Completed Ebay auctions (No additional info)

1 Sold for $27.10 (it was missing one knob from the handle)

1 Sold for $50.00 (it was complete)

That seems pretty clear, the notched countwheel is the pulse coder.
