I bought this with a large lot of books...I don't think I would have even picked it up, if I didn't have this forum to back me up :)...I think it is a West African Goge or Imzad. What would be the fret board looks like it has a good deal of wear...but I really do not know tribe or age....Often what I think is African is Indonesian. goge1.jpg goge2.jpg goge3.jpg goge5.jpg goge6.jpg goge4.jpg

African is not my forte, so just a guess, an antilope dance mask? Would have had things attached to cover the face, textile, raffia?

I would think that it is too crude to be an actual playable instrument from any culture. Whether from Africa or elsewhere, musicians are smart enough to use only instruments that are made well enough to be playable.
I've seen (and played, sometimes) a number of African instruments, and I'd guess that this is a souvenir-quality item, perhaps older, and in relic condition.

g1.jpg I agree that horns are a large part of the Guru mythology...I have these two masks for sale that are very detailed in their carving...It seems that so far the consensus is ...not an instrument but a mask...thank you for your input g2.jpg

That was my first thought, as well (and I haven't come up with a second.)

I'd say it's definitely west African, a mask, and made for sale rather than actual use. The Guro make a lot of horned masks, and they are one of the few who use this color of green, if that's any help.
