Three nice silver pendants. Can anyone read the scrawly signature?

Also, FABULOUS Edwardian silver screw backs with illusion cut opalescent glass to give the image of a pagoda. I've seen this done with paperweights, but not jewellery.

Do you think? The illusion weights I've had like this have mostly been French. Findings are marked Silver.

My theory was that the pagoda might have been one of our British ones, built as follies.

It is a typical Japanese pagoda, I don't know if there were any traditional Japanese ones in the UK at the time.

Ah, we had pagodas in the 18th century. The famous one is at Kew Gardens, I've seen it quite a bit. Sheltered from the rain inside it.

I know that one, it is a beauty, but Chinese inspired, not Japanese.;)
The others are probably also Chinese inspired.
Japan wasn't very familiar to most Western countries until the opening up of Japan to the rest of the world in the second half of the 19th century. For centuries only the Dutch had a trading post in Japan.

Hoom, that's an interesting point. I don't associate Japan with illusion carved glass, or indeed, much art type glass at all. Or at least, not till the fifities and sixties, there's some cracking MCM stuff.

    Nice little mysteries!

Oho! Many thanks Kyra. I've never seen these before, which surprises me. I feel a new hunt coming on.

    Not bad for three quid.
