Older folks need to realize that heirs may not share their personal tastes in collectables. Or they may want to pick and choose a few pieces but don't want the bulk of the items. Many younger people are just now getting established after the economic turmoil that has profound effects over the past decade. Also due to increasing housing costs, many simply cannot afford to store bulky items even if they wanted to. Going to auctions, it is amazing how much stuff the boomer generation has accumulated and a lot of that isn't anything that resembles things that people would want to collect.

In other similar articles I have started to wonder if the authors are getting a kickback from EBTH since this line of thinking that millennials will indiscriminately head everything to the dumpster obviously benefits their business model. I've been seeing a lot of advertisement for them disguised as helpful articles for seniors.

Ain't that the truth - I've packed boxes and boxes of my parents "collectibles" and took them straight to Goodwill. I kept boxes of Franciscan to probably sell on Ebay - after all, who needs 10 more boxes of it when I allready have china cabinets full and never use it? I was amazed at all the Franciscan my Mother "collected". Just when I thought I had boxed all of it up there was more everywhere. 2 china cabinets FULL, shelves FULL, boxes in the closets FULL, dresser drawers FULL - it was amazing.

The kids just plain don't want it if they don't have a practical use for it. I did manage to give away some vintage Christmas ornaments - put them in a wedding gift.(LOL) The couple in question hadn't even thought of buying Christmas decorations, so they were actually needed. Victorian furniture is a no-go too, for the most part unless you run into a bunch of goths. That trend has pretty well gone too.

Yeah, basically same dealio, NOBODY WANTS YOUR JUNK!
I don't think i will have this problem, i suspect the early american tavern tables, work stands & other small pieces will be snapped up by the kids as i have traded up over the years to outstanding examples.
Larger pieces could be in trouble though like the "bird" chest of drawers, it might end up at auction. Ditto the william & mary gate leg dining table.

As long as you tell your kids.

I have quite a large valuable coin and banknote collection.

Non of my kids are interested in the hobby.

I`ll probably sell the lot in a few years however each item has a valuation attached just in case I slip off the peg unexpected.

Oh yeah, they are very well aware that some of these larger pieces are museum quality and quite valuable even if they are not interested in keeping them.

My son won't want my antiques but he will certainly want the money they will realize when he sells them.

True that but, the house isn't cash either and very little doubt that it will be converted into cash.

My stuff is very saleable and he would have no trouble, auction houses would jump at the chance to buy it, all of it :)

My cousin works retail; his store got two silver dollars in payment for coffee. The last I heard, his daughter's college fund just got started.:)
