Any idea who the artist might be?

Marote, we like to see photographs of the entire work including frame from both front and back. Could/would you post those photographs?

So charming. Clearly the work of a professional. My eye reads "Young" as the surname but that may be very wrong. Think you're going to have to open it up and see what you can find inside. (The backing looks new anyway.)

I also thing it's a professional "Young", but I haven't been able to find any similar work by an "M. Young".
One of these days I might indeed perform surgery on the frame :nurse:

I'd think -- given the subject, it's delicacy and the date format -- that would be by a French artist. That's why I think Young isn't correct.

Maybe the type of uniform of the soldier can lead us in the right direction?

Something like this worn by 18th century Swiss soldier. But red coats weren't uncommon in the era.

Red coats were indeed used by various armies in various eras

Don't know if the shoulder belt going from left (right shoulder) to right helps further identifying the country, and he seems to be wearing a white wig. But maybe the artist just imagined how a redcoat officer would look like, without using any factual accuracy ...

It has also that Crayon look about it, though it is a watercolor.

    Date format suggests not American?

The work is dated 29-7-44. Americans would write 7-29-44 and say July 29, 1944. The French (for example) would write 29-7-44 because they say dates with day, month and year in that order. In this instance, it would be le 29 juillet 1944.

According to this theory, it will be continental

How disappointing. It's very charming. There must be other work by her/him out there.

It looks like it could be an illustration for a book or magazine article. Unfortunately, many illustrators are very talented, but unsung artists. Just a guess on my part.
