Watercolor Signed Dale

This is signed Dale. Looks very similar to other Dale Nichols works. Unframed and matted. Matte measures 24” x 18”. Painting is on a thin cardboard which measures 15 1/2” x 19 3/4”.

 

I see the resemblance. Crisp, light, pretty.
I tried to find a "Dale" Nichols signature that matched yours... no luck... so that's all I can offer. Good luck!

 

It does look remarkably similar and shows great skill with watercolors. The signature appears to be different even when we look at the name itself.

Were you able to find more examples of his signature?

 

The signatures I saw... had full name, printed... yes.

 

I'm just curious but . . . why is the "copyright" showing the letters "n. d."? Could it possibly mean "nichols dale," and if so why would the initials (of his name) be reversed for the "copyright"?

 

The C sybol seems to me to indicate it is a print, not a watercolour. I have never seen an artist put a copyright symbol on an original work.

 

AF, I've never seen it myself, but I have been told by several that artists do put copyright symbols, usually right by their signature, though. The placement of this copyright would seem "off", in that case. After a moment's thought... it probably is a print. Kraft, can you look sideways at the surface for differentially-raised, roughened areas, that would indicate watercolor?

 

I wonder if N.D. is for no derivatives. I'm not really sure what that means but I think it's something like it's a copy of someone's work without changes or something like that. (could be totally wrong though)

 

Antart, I did see a picture of a different signature. Let me see if I can find it again.

Definately not a print. Its not behind glass, just the watercolor on a matte.

I wonder if what you have is a print done in a watercolor airbrush. These were very popular in the 40s-50s.

 

I really don't think this is any kind of print.

 

Ok I am really looking at this...maybe it is a watercolor airbrush...but holy crap it looks awesome...

 

I think it's half-way between a painting and a print: technically airbrushed watercolor, but factory production that used a stencil process.

I have a stamp on the back of mine...says copyright 1941 Newman Decor Inc. its faint and took me forever to read it.
