    Art is not my thing.

Found this in the attic of the latest clearance.
It was very dirty and couldn't be seen until I cleaned the glass.

Bridge over a canal or stream. (I presume in the UK)

    Signed A. Wright 43 which I think means 1943

Is this an amatuer piece or a known artist.

I've taken it out of the frame, there is nothing else to ID it.

Dunno about good, but it's pretty. It's better than amateur, and has a full signature instead of just initials. That generally means someone who takes money for their work.

It looks like there is something going on the other side of the bridge. Is it a lock? Pretty peaceful for a wartime painting:)

His reach exceeds his grasp a bit. (Note, for instance, how he's dealt with the elements under the bridge.) I'd think Sunday painter with a bit of training.

I agree that it's someone above a weekend painter. Used a very limited palette of colors. My brain wants to see a figure somewhere in the composition. The focal point is a bit stagnant.

Thanks guys, not a masterpiece then

It does look like a small lock through that bridge.

That may be "93" rather than "43."

Locks and Weirs on the River Thames (wiki) - you may even be able to see the one in your painting, there's quite a list there, all with links

My Great Uncle's name was Weir :)
Meaning: Scottish and English: topographic name for someone who lived by a dam or weir on a river.

No its 43, it was put up in the attic decades ago.

I found this on the backing board.
Those measurements have not been used over here in my lifetime.

For those who care "NOT" surface refers to a paper that is not hot pressed (smooth finish). Otherwise known as cold pressed paper. Has a moderate texture or tooth.

Might have been the only colours available in wartime Britain, they actually look like the colours of camouflage.
The artist might have been an off duty serviceman.

Tadpole bridge is similar, though I can't see any evidence of that lock. Lot of local boaters that would love something like that :)

It could be a bridge in Yorkshire, where Davey is. Yorkshire has some beautiful old bridges, many of them in that Roman style, mostly later periods of course.
Here is my favourite, Rievaulx Bridge, near Rievaulx Abbey:

Davey's is also in that Roman style, but different from Rievaulx Bridge.
Must add the abbey, those Cistercians knew how to pick a spot for contemplation:

I found one with steps inside the bridge and lock.
This is part of the 137 mile Grand Union Canal near Cowley.

A painting and a photograph 75 years apart, I wonder.
