I used to be able to do a very granular Google search, I’m thinking there was a way to search the contents of all Google book, not just search to,locate books. What happened, I can’t seem to get into that feature anymore! I found stuff you wouldn’t believe that way. Was that discontinued or if not pls tell me how to get there.

    thanks

On any google search, there is a selection of options: All, Shopping, Images, Videos, News, and More. Click on More, and there is a drop down list that includes Books. Click on that and it will search the texts of all kinds of books. You can search articles through Google Scholar - https://scholar.google.com/.

Thanks all for the info. I guess I’m doing something wrong. I get this page and can’t follow the path outlined. Www.Google.com. I get to page with GOOGLE in colors at top. Search blank, and several choice buttons at top, and two columns of picture links to current news articles. No “more” choice and “books” returns only books about Google. ???

I see what you mean about that. I had never searched the Books section that way, but remember it was there. If you search "Google books" with or without the quotation marks, the URL for the book search should be the first result. Then you can click on that to search. That is one extra step for you. You could also add the page https://books.google.com/ to your bookmarks. Then it's one click to get to the search page.

Thanks. Using your link I get to a search blank described underneath as: “Search the world's most comprehensive index of full-text books.”. Then I put in my search terms and it returns one whole book per hit, based on book title, not what I need. I want to search the texts of all Google books and get hits showing the page text with my search terms highlighted. I used to be able to do that. I do get that when searching internet archive but want to do it with Google books.

I see what you mean. Try the Advanced link that Kronos posted above. https://books.google.com/advanced_book_search

They seem to have removed the Advanced options from the simple Google Books home page. Bad! However, I did do a search from that simple page. After you do one search you then have the ability to narrow the search. However, I couldn't find a link to that Advanced page.

I did a search for "springfield arsenal" (based on your user name) and got thousands of results. Some of them include a "found inside" box that highlights the terms for those books that are full text or that show some sort of preview. As always, there are some books that are not full text in the database and have no preview. That is nothing new, of course.

I don't like the way that a separate box that spreads over the rest of the screen when you click the preview link.

Ok thanks, that did it, remember if you saw my post regarding the shot gage with inscription “German Steel,” followed by a logo picturing a club and a heart? Two of the hits from Advanced Search make it clear that there was a particular German Steel marketed under the name “heart and club.” The book that actually describes its benefits is only snippet view, but maybe I can track down a copy.

Thx for all the advice, another difficult puzzle solved!

The particular route may depend on the browser you are using. I am using Chrome, which has a blank search line immediately below the tabs at the top of the page. I can enter search terms, and then get a secondary bubble below, which has the other options right below that.

I was using Chrome, too, but don't see any tabs at the top of the page, nor any other search line besides the main one. But browsers can be configured, and maybe whichever way yours is configured is different from mine? Probably doesn't matter, as long as we can all get there. :)

Here's how my Google Books search screen looks. I had to remember how to save a screen shot!
