A good friend of my family who was in WWII gave this compass made by W. & L. E. Gurley to my dad who was in Vietnam War. Ironically, the good friend lived in Troy, NY where this compass was made. The leather bag dimensions are about 6 3/4" x 7 3/4" x 2 1/4" and the compass dimensions are around 5 5/8" diameter, 3/4" height without the underneath pole insert or 2" height with the underneath pole insert I was wondering how old it might be, if its worth anything and what ship it came off of if not by name maybe by type of ship like aircraft, battle ship etc...? Thank you.

The maker's name looks more like Gurley than Gurbey.

Given the early to mid 20th century Troy city directory listings for W and LE Gurley, this is more likely to be surveying equipment than a "ship's compass."

The sad part is I convinced myself through my research that I was right. I am glad that I put this up and found out differently that it is survey compass. I was wondering why I found a piece of paper and a pencil in my dad's hand writing with degrees on his mom's property lines.
