Walnut carved chair

So I bought a storage unit, and this beautiful rocking chair was in it, you can tell somebody really loved to sit in it! Looks like it is Walnut? Also, the only label/marking I could find was on the bottom, some sort of number? If anybody has any ideas on what kind of background this comes from and possibly the value? Thanks for your help in advance!

 

Turn of the century, late Victorian. Can't tell the wood from this pic but were often mahogany with lesser woods stained to match.

 

I was going to say that these chairs are often stained, but see Brad has already stated that.

You can see where the stain has worn on the arms of the chair.

Renaissance revival, lion finials, here's a very similar one that sold at Skinner. May even be the same chair from the same manufacturer, in which case look for a piece of missing wood at the front under the seat: http://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/2773M/lots/536

 

Generally don't doubt Skinner's but would not call this renaissance revival.

 

Agree, the late Victorian designs sometimes drifted to an amalgamation of historical designs. . . one would have to take a close look at the grain of the wood as to type - the staining of the era hides it often. Nice looking chair.
