Just found this today and it fit-$25.00. Should date from late WWII to Korean War (1950-51). I've liked these since the swingin' sixties-sure took long enough to buy one !
With Marianne Faithfull's passing-took me back to that Carnaby Street era. Wore it all today (it was in the 40's to low 50's) and it was warm !
PS-Just needs a few button-easy peasy to buy online.
PSS- Can anyone guess what's stenciled on the coats lining ?

According to "The Bluejackets Manual" articles of clothing are to be marked with the owners name and Social Security number using a 1/2" stencil. Additionally company or unit numbers are often marked. Navy Peacoats have magic powers that make the person wearing it, regardless of their body type, look hot.

Lots of military surplus around in that era. The corduroy pocket lining would be a late 1960s/early 1970s modification.

What a great p coat! My father was in the Navy during WWII and I had a denim jacket that he wore then. I wore it during the late 60s when I was at Ohio State. It had metal buttons that were secured to the jacket with round metal pins which I thought was a neat way to secure them. Everyone complimented me on the jacket, but unfortunately, someone appropriated it and it's now lost. But I still have my father's wool beanie hat that has his name stenciled on one of those tags. It would go well with your p coat and the wool is waterproof. I could never wear the beanie cuz my head was too big. Maybe it was all the hair? The coat looked like this.

it dates from the period immediately post WWII(1947 through the early 50s) . if it was WWII era it would have a 10 button front, 8 buttons showing. they switched to the 8 button front, with 6 buttons showing, right after the war. the corduroy pocket, which was standard during WWII in the manufacture and not added during the 60s, was dropped at this time(1947). yours has corduroy pockets and that's unusual. that suggests to me that it was made early in this period of redesign. the stencils were usually related to the ship or ships the owner served on. i've seen them with multiple stencils. here's a site with information on dating these jackets: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/peacoat-dating.35824/

Interesting re the corduroy pocket. And I very much appreciate the correction.

Strangely I bought two vintage Peacoats in the last few months to wear them, one from ww2 and the other post-Vietnam era, so went down the same rabbit hole to understand them.

A couple of tweaks - first, I don’t believe soc. security numbers are typically stenciled, though name certainly was. My Ww2 coat (with 10 buttons) has the name and 5025 stenciled three times in different spots, so in mine numbers would be unit numbers? Or ship Id? Unless they were using partial Ss numbers?

Second, the corduroy pockets were used continuously from at least the 1930’s up to 1966. All Peacoats prior to 1967 should have the corduroy pockets. My post-Vietnam era coat is dated 1975, so it does not have corduroy pockets, though my older one does. Nor does the later jacket have stenciled name or number, just hand writing on the tag.

Finally, I believe OP coat can be precisely dated to 1948 or 49. And you got a good deal!

My husband is a Navy vet. My daughter started wearing his old pea coat in high school. It went off to college with her. She's now 50 living in Atlanta and says it's the best thing for their freak cold weather!

    I love peacoats!
It's my favorite style of coat, and I have several in the closet right now.
Great lapels for showing off vintage brooches.

I wear an Israeli army shirt all the time. I got it before the most current of the recurrent conflicts in the area. I love it as a shirt. I actually didn’t even know what language the text on it was in when I pulled it out of a closet at an estate sale. A couple times American Jewish folks have assumed I’m also Jewish when I wear it out. I’m missing a button or two as well. I was thinking of stripping all the olive green buttons and replacing them with a purplish maroon button. I think it would look cool. Not sure if that would be disrespectful to the uniform. I guess it’s mine to do with as I please at this point. Some part of me thinks the former owner might be glad someone liked a piece of his history and is giving it new life, maybe not though.

This is the one. I got a couple big boxes jammed full of US Army pieces from the late 50’s through the 60’s on the side of the road once. Probably at least 30 garments. From boots, to short shorts, to trench coats, and everything in between. All belong to a guy named “Winner”. So it’s kind of odd when they have a name patch on them. You’d think the shirt with it was a prize. It took me a minute to realize what was going on. I’m guessing the short shorts were for when they had leave. If I had better thighs I’d rock them.

What a prize Dagger-30 pieces dumped ! Sounds like either someone had passed or a Vet who was ready to move on ?

Yep, wore the Mexican cardigan too.;)
In 1972 I arrived in Mexico City from the Pacific and didn't have any warm clothes. There was no such thing as winter where I lived, and Mexico felt sub-zero to me. So I went to the nearest market and got one of those cardigans.

AJ- Did you live near the Equator in the Tropics ?
PS-Same with my Bro in Costa Rica-it's always high 60's to mid 80's,no seasons really except Wet & Dry Season. Not what we'd call Spring or Fall here in the States.
