Hello! I have a vintage brass pan spittoon possibly from the late 1800’s to early 1920’s in my possession. On the bottom of the spittoon it has engraved, H.WM. STEINERT, over the address, 239 CENTRE ST. N.Y. I was hoping somebody can help me as I have found no information on the name or address engraved on the spittoon. Thanks!

Think it would help if we could see it?

Centre Street is now all court buildings & other governmental offices, Would think brass items have not been produced in that part of town for quite a long time.

I found an NYC Directory listing for H. Wm. Steinert, Brass Goods, Hotel and Club Supplies, in the 1891 edition, but at a different address on Centre St. - 947. Listings for him continue for about 20 years (to the early teens) but I did not see one at the address on your spittoon.

Wonderful! I posted a link to photos on the original post! If you could link me or show me how to get to that directory, that would be amazing.

I have done more research and I have found a Business Directory from the Boroughs of Manhattan and the bronx and the city of New York, from 1898. The Directory had the name and address that was on the spittoon in the directory. William H. Steinert was a brass finisher. So I think I found my answer. Thank you!!

Thank you! For a new comer, I found digging for information quite interesting. I have a bunch of antiques from my grandfather and I think im gonna see if I can find more information about them. Thank you for your help! If you didn’t tell me about the directory I would of had no clue where to start.
