My grandmother traveled the "orient" extensively mainly in the 1920's through the 70's. Brought back a lot in those years. Some of it tourist things but some of it wasn't. Not too sure where this falls in. Looks handmade. Pretty sure it's ivory. Not in the best condition but nothing that can't be repaired. No marks on pieces or box. Can't find anything like it on the net Any idea about age? Just for displaying? Are they considered ancient instruments replicas? All comments appreciated.

How do you know they are Japanese? Could they be from another country in the area?

Lovely, dc. They are models of Chinese musical instruments, not Japanese.

The ones I know, from left to right:
    1: Ruan
2: Can't see the details properly, but my guess is a Xiao (type of flute)
    3. Guzheng or Zheng
    4. -
    5. Probably a Sanxian
    6. -
    7. Pipa
    8. Erhu

Maybe @all_fakes can fill in the blanks, and maybe correct my id's.:)
    Not ancient, but traditional.

I guess they just looked Japanese to me but I guess I was wrong.

No worries, you can't know everything.
They are neighbours, albeit with a stretch of water between them. And they have related cultures.

I think AJ had it. I might mention that unless you know for sure that your GM got them at a particular date, you should remember that people give gifts, and since these sets are still being made today, it is possible that a friend or relative gave them to your GM relatively recently.
It is hard to judge age from photos, often.

    Adding to Any Jewelry's list...

I believe this set is of Vietnamese instrument styling, yet Chinese instruments are extremely similar, mostly because I am not familiar with an instrument in the Chinese line-up for #6, whereas there is a good match in Vietnamese.

    From left to right:
    1. Yue Qin (Chinese)
    1. Đàn Nguyệt (Vietnamese)
    2. Xiào (Chinese)
    2. Tiêu (Vietnamese)
    3. Zheng or Gu Zheng (Chinese) 箏 Zheng or 古箏 Guzheng which literally translates to 古 Ancient 箏 Zheng.
    3. Đàn Tranh (Vietnamese)
    4. Du Xian Qin (Chinese)
    4. Đàn Bầu (Vietnamese)
    5. Sanxian (Chinese)
    5. Đàn Tam (Vietnamese)
    6. Yehu or Banhu (Chinese) - Closest Equivalent though wrong shape and has no frets, these are closer in fact to the Erhu.
    6. Shamisen (Japanese) - Closest Equivalent though has no frets
    6. Đàn đáy (Vietnamese)
    7. Pipa (Chinese)
    7. Đàn tỳ bà (Vietnamese)
    8. Erhu (Chinese)
    8. Đàn nhị (Vietnamese)

It's at least fifty years old. I remember it in my grandmother house when I was just a kid. Plus, I doubt they are still making sets like this these days considering it is mostly made of ivory. I searched online and was unable to locate even one other.
