I found this chess set yesterday; when I picked it up I was shocked at how heavy it is - it has to weigh over 20 pounds!
Researching it I found it is a Mayans vs Conquistadors chess set & I think they pieces are made of malachite - except I haven't been able to find another with red pieces? I have found them with green and black, but that's all.
Are these made of malachite? If not then what?
    Thank you!
PS - If these sell on eBay instead of local, the shipping cost is going to be something else with that weight!

I don't see any malachite, journey. It is stone chip in resin.
Malachite is a green semi-precious stone.

It's a handsome set. I think of this stuff as mid-century.

(So many different themes for chess set: my favorite was capitalists vs communists)

I'd think much more recent. Earlier Mexican chess sets were onyx.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were still making these.

Thanks - stone chips in resin - got it; and if not that old still an unusual color at least!
