Vintage Large Oriental Ginger Jar Value and Info Please...and thank you! This jar is large...I have two that look exactly alike. They measure about 18" tall. I think the bottom is hand stamped...not painted...so I am confused as to age and value. They are very beautiful! The last picture is the stamp? There is also a piece of paper taped to the bottom that tells what the stamp means. I think it is a stamp.

As a general rule, reign marks on Chinese pottery are fake.

I'd say it is no earlier than the second half of the 20th C.

Please note I am not a ceramics expert, just a cynical dealer.

As af said as a general rule, Chinese reign marks are usually fake or called honorary marks. This mark is saying Qianlong dynasty, but probably dates from the mid 1960s. Do compare your markings to some on the following page. This type of Chinese mark is a hand drawn script seal as oppsed to handwritten.

Scroll down the page to the section:
"Qianlong Nian Zhi, Da Qing - Qianlong Period Make, Great Qing Dynasty"

The general description of this section:
"These six character marks follow the traditional way of drawing seal marks in archaic seal script, zhuanshu, from the Qianlong period 1736-1795. The manner is a drawing more like an engraving rather than actual hand writing. None of the following marks are of the Qianlong period despite that they say so. See comments next to each individual mark for an approximate date."

    Specifically look at #s: 247, 602, & 373. 247 says
"247. Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi "Great Qing Qianlong Period Make". Tentative period 1950-75."

#282, 184, and 513 are of the other marks that are done in normal script, hand written, as oppose to the seal script that are drawings.

Scroll a good half way down the page,

Do wait for others more knowledgable in oriental ceramic to chime in.

I would not say that as a general rule marks on Chinese ceramics are fake. More like the marks are the last thing to look at when figuring age. Also, you can have a recent piece with old mark but you can have a 19th century piece with 17th century mark as well.
General rule is that reign marks on older pieces should be centered in the middle and hand painted as oppossed to stamped. But that is more for marks from the periods. You can see stamped marks on late 19th and early 20th century pieces.

Qianlong is known for its superb quality. A mark from the period would be perfectly drawn.
The jar above is recent. Post Republic. The decoration, the colors, the drawing style and the paints used are not right for older piece.
The dirt on the foot ring is also a sign of faked age.

Yes, it is obvious that loving care went into the creation of these pieces, I don't think they were made to fool anyone into thinking they were old, but maybe to continue the beauty of older pieces that may be lost...I am not sure about that...but curious. Why are pieces like this made?
