So, this guy had posted a listing on the Estate Sale site that he was going to have a sale over Thanksgiving weekend. I had never been to the place before, but it was in Plainwell, Michigan in what looked like an old outdoor equipment dealership. Anyway the guy had run estate sales for decades and now just seemed to be a dealer. He had a boat load of stuff and I had to tippy toe around the store because there was artwork leaned up against the walls all over the place. I went through everything and I settled on this nice watercolor, we agreed on $100 cash. He said it was by a know artist, but I didn't really care because it was so well done. It looks to me that it must be by Vincenzo Loria, the signature seems to match other paintings I could find. I particularly like the face, because it is technically well done and the emotion is captured quite well. I was curious as to what you think the gentleman is, Monk or clergy of some sort? I assume it would be associated with Italy in some way.

A Capuchin friar. Capuchins are one of the Franciscan orders. Founded in Italy, but they can be found in many countries.
One of my philosophy professors was a Belgian Capuchin. When at uni he wore civvies. Great guy, great sense of humour.

I think the blindstamp is for the paper manufacturer Schleicher & Schüll.

That's great, thanks for the info. My comparative religion prof. was an ex catholic priest, really cool guy, taught well into his 80's.

I have always liked clergy etc who work in the academic world, they usually have an outgoing personality and fun sense of humour.
