Can anyone tell me if this is really from the 19th century?
The Ukranian thrift i go to had it for sale for $4.99 USD so I couldn't say no.
He is 28" tall. All wood except for the wheel spokes and outer rim. And I am pretty sure his eyes are glass.
At first i thought it was a broken toy but have seen similar since so this is the way it is supposed to be.

I'd suspect that was an import from India. Lot of stick hobby horses on eBay. Have you done a comparison there?

I hope not. Unless it was an import in the 1880s lol

Cotter pins are from around 1912 onwards.

Thank you all for your help.
So most likely early 20th century.
@cxgirl that one you say is similar, Is just about as close as you can get!
Even at $50.00 it's a very good profit!

Gotta say, this and those others found, so similar in carving, painting, and 'aging', bear strong resemblance to rocking horses and other pieces that the owner of the antiques mall I managed in the early '90s imported from Indonesia, along with 'antique style' furniture (a lovely man, but his 'Reproduction Room' was part of the reason I left)...
