Does this look like something worth 125? Sorry for the poor images. 00Y0Y_e77E6u6M205z_0t20CI_600x450.jpg

if u are prepared to re-upholster that gawd awful black fabric ....for a few hundred bucks..... then I'd say yes.

it could be made into a rooms show stopper...or focal point...!

if....on da otter hand...yer looking to flip it........then ...no.

if yer the seller.......then take 95 and open some floor space...

    You see , Sir....
you ask an honest question...but provide next to no information with which any of us would be able to properly give you , a proper answer!!

Is it something you're interested in acquiring for your home? Or for resale?

Now hang on a minute.. altho it probably is NOT, it is possible that is original black haircloth (AKA horsehair) fabric. If so, it would increase the value. If it feels slick and plasticky, it is haircloth. The tiny photo is not allowing me to date it with any assurance but the whole chair doesn't look quite right for Victorian. And the back would probably be button-tucked. I would love to see better photos. And yes, reupholstering is cost-ineffective these days unless you can do it yourself.

I don't see any unfriendliness here. I think you are misreading the replies. And none of us are professionals, we are all volunteers here, who also love old things. We just need more information to help answer your inquiry. What something is "worth" is very subjective and personal, even with knowing a lot of details, which we weren't given. So, if you could elaborate and give us some tangible info to work with, such as better photos showing details and construction, location of said object, post the dimensions, etc. we will be happy to try and assist you.

Yes Ms. House....that is my mantra...

but here , a little late into the nighttime , with only a photo and a question....I offered up a reasonably friendly , professional, and pleasant group of answers , along with an honest statement , thought provoking , dry & without malice.

AND STILL, I get dumped on.....!!

This is circa 1865 so quite old and nicer than most (assuming not a reproduction but can't tell from the one pic.). Not in fashion right now and sometimes you can find these dirt-cheap when needing upholstery. Agree that the back should be button tufted. This would be expensive to have upholstered correctly. Here is how it should look, though the fabric choice here is questionable.

The lack of button tufting makes it look strangely inert. But quite a graceful shape.

I rather like it. Is it comfortable? Sturdy? When you turn it over, are there any badly done repairs? Will it work in your home as is, or would you have to re-upholster it? Does it smell strongly of anything unpleasant, or of scented Febreeze or the like? Press the cushioned parts firmly a few times to be sure. You don’t want to get it home and discover an unpleasant odor buried deep in the cushioning! Is the finish original? In good shape?

If it is what it looks like, (and someone here can probably tell you if you provide pictures of the underside, back, closeups of any joins, clearer pictures), and you like it, and it’s comfortable, I’d say it’s worth buying. If you have to get it reupholstered, it could easily end up being a very expensive chair… but you would have something you like that could outlive you.

If you want the chair for yourself, make the seller an offer. I would offer between $75 to $95. If the price of reupholstering is a concern, you can send this photo to a reupholsterer and get a ballpark price before you buy the chair to see if the total suits you. I had a ladies desk chair with tufted back reupholstered recently and it cost either $120 or $180, I can't remember which but I was very pleased with the finished product and I love the chair. And I agree that the back should be tufted, but I can imagine why it isn't. Like me, the person who owned it previously maybe didn't like how dust tends to cluster in the tufts. But that's what vacuum sweeper attachments are for. Just don't let the dog sit on it.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The arms of the chair in the first post look overstuffed compared to the rest of it, imo. Proportionally it looks a little unbalanced. So I suspect it has been reupholstered at some point.

Also, @Maek , values people have estimated are probably in US dollars. You didn't mention where you are, or where the chair is. So you might need to convert if you are not in the United States.

As far as I can see the information that has been provided without pictures of detail are very good. As you said you want to learn. Besides what has been covered already I think I would only add that the small white pieces in between the frame and back cushion are probably moth balls. I would also say that Darkwing gave you a great assessment of what may be original contents inside. A hint without ripping it apart to check would be tack holes along the upholstery line. If there are many you should consider that to reupholster there needs to be good strength of wood for the tacks. To get any fair price from an upholsterer you need to send pics of back and underneath also. Even then they might not quote. Living to love the learn is my motto. You won’t get bad advise on this forum. Good luck. I do like the char!
