    Welcome, henrycow! Even if there are no marks on the bottom, it always helps to show a picture of it. ;)

    Do I see a samurai peeking out of the tree?

    The base may show the clay type and indicators of period

    Nice.. I hope somebody can tell you something about the clay. It looks like the same type that was used in a pottery class I took. (This one is not from a pottery class, of course.)

    No expert here but seeing the bottom made me think "Satsuma". So, I think it's Japanese. I hope that helps!
