I can't think of any other reason for a decorative clasp on such a workmanlike chain. It's the right length, about 56" - I've always imagined it was for a someone who couldn't afford something more precious, possibly part of a servant's chatelaine? Just an oddity I've never figured out - any opinions welcome :)

It has the length of a cheap and cheerful muff chain, but the box slide clasp is very unusual for a muff chain. Maybe a 20s flapper necklace that has had a hard life?
The style of the clasp looks German to me, but let's wait for the others.

Maybe some very adventurous manufacturer made a single chain one?

    Thanks @i need help!

Why do you suppose they say ball chain jewelry is always multi strand? The clasp is identical, as far as I can tell...

I like my idea(s), but wouldn't want to use it as a muff chain with that clasp - i don't think it'd hold up to that use...

    How fun!

I don’t know why they say must be more than 2. I don’t know how accurate this is. I just thought it was interesting. Designed after a light pull chain?

I have seen white and colors before, now that I think of it...

Early Steampunk - isn't that some kind of oxymoron?
