What was this used for? About 8" tall.
How do you tell salt glaze from alkaline?
Any suggestions on origin, age etc...?
    Thanks

Modern studio pottery. The use is ... whatever you feel like.

    Thanks for the reply.
How can you tell that is modern?

I'd agree, that it's modern studio pottery. Many contemporary potters experiment with old techniques of glazing and firing, which can result in pots that resemble the old stoneware. This one, however, doesn't show any evidence of wear or use, which would be present on a hundred year old or so pot. The bowl shape also points more to a modern piece.

It appears to be salt glazed, in a wood fired kiln. With a rather uneven firing.

Classic alkaline glaze is usually a greenish-brown color, and is flowing or "runny," with drips. Salt glaze is usually more cream to tan in color, and has what is generally referred to as an "orange peel" surface.

    Thanks for the info.
I was thinking some kind of large mortar but could be just decorative.
I don't know, really can't tell if there is wear or not with the nature of the glaze and the flaws.
Could be studio piece. North Carolina maybe?

    Emailed the crockersfarm.
They are not very certain but here is their reply.

"That looks like it could be a relatively early 20th century North Carolina example, but I'm not sure. Either way, without blue decoration the value would not tend to be all that significant, but I hope this helps"
