Unusual brass padlock- any ideas as to origin

I picked up this lock in a small pile of things from another dealer.

It’s fairly small, about 1-1/2” in diameter. The two larger dials move independently of each other, the small center ones are linked. The unevenly spaced Roman numerals make me think it’s entirely hand made, but I can’t find a comparable design online. Unfortunately I do not have a combination to open it. Anyone have ideas about the origin or name of this design?

    How do those numbers work?
Roman numeral, start at "I" count notches over so next I'd think would be "V" but it's "II".

Is this usual in old locks?

So let me throw this out there for consideration: The lock faces were ground down and the Roman numerals added back to the smoothed surfaces???? All the locks like yours I've seen have regular numbers as per example........

I think I found an answer to my question about numbering.

I'm finding "clock face" padlocks, sometimes with clock hands and Roman numerals. In my looking I didn't see this exact one but thought the seach term might prove helpful.

In don’t think so on this one. The middle dial is tight against the
That’s a pretty close lock, but I don’t think they were ground. I don’t notice any tapering or thinning towards the edge of the dials the the center wheel is tight and has basically no play. Also I think the shackle on that one is iron. Mine is brass.

Maybe try asking on that padlock site. I've enjoyed looking through some of the many types they show.

Bottom of the home page says you can send inquiries. Don't know if they do identification or not. Says contact their curator.

Nappy-Perhaps best not to mention 'Sold Price' to the Dealer you bought it from.

Thank you. Someone else posted the photo, but I did not see the listing. That is a lot for a little padlock.
