    Hi All,

Can anyone help me ID this object?

I got it at auction and have no idea where it might of came from. I guess that it's a candleholder?

    Thanks!

    Calum

Is it black inside the "pot" - maybe an inkwell with no or missing top?

Yes, appears to be missing a lid.

I'd guess the dog is reproduced from same ancient example: post-Roman / pre-Rennaisance sort of thing.

Thanks all :) Hadn't considered that it might have been an inkwell, makes sense. The style does look like a reproduction of something ancient.

I've just put my finger in the hole and it came out black so definitely an ink well!
