i've had this statue for about seven years now and have searched all over for a signature but to no avail. The piece stands 46" tall and weighs over 200 lbs. I believe that it is a statue of athena carrying the head of medusa. I love the detail. Any thoughts about attribution?

There was a period of time during the 1990s when I remember some of the antiques dealers placing new bronze statues into their offerings. I think this could be one of those.

at 46 inches, wouldn't bronze weigh a lot more?

I'd guess it to be hollow.

    Title states, "Athena".

Is the piece titled, or is that what the OP is calling it - I'm missing a LOT more than just that info, but that is the relevant right now:eek::eek:

It took two of us to move it and we both spend a lot of time in the weight room! "Over 200 lbs" was a very conservative way of saying it is very heavy! I have no desire to put it on a scale!! It appears to be filled with concrete.

I agree that the shield seems to lack the same level of appeal. I just do not understand why this would not be signed. I cannot find another piece like it and welcome the wisdom of those much more knowledgeable than I.

I purchased it like everything else that I buy because I like it but find myself wanting to know the sory behind it!

And that, my dear sir, seems to be the story of ALL of our lives here in Let's Discuss Everything Land..................though in my case I don't buy it, I inherit it and won't let go...................

    She is very lovely.
It would be mine too, Pallas Athena to be correct, since she has a lance. Pallas translates to something like lance-wielding. Her right foot is on a book - wisdom.

Sorry, should have told you not to:D.

And I retract my suggestion - any representation of Boadicea that shows any head gear at all shows a circlet/crown not a helmet...............

While reasonably nice quality, I do think it likely to be a modern re-cast.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The head of Medusa was placed on Athena's shield... so it's Athena.

I pretty sure this is modern; the way she is posing is not found in any classic examples.

Anyone want to hazard a guess on valuation?

Or.....at $600, did I pay too much? I understand that if I am getting $600 worth of utility from it, I did not pay too much but I am more curious about market appraisal.

I cannot give you a definitive answer but I'd say you didn't do bad at $600.

I tend to believe this as well but not convinced that it is a recast but rather a more contemporary interpretation. Keep wondering about the lack of a signature though....
