Unknown case, any ideas?

This case was my great uncle's. Its been in the family for about 40 years since his passing. He used it for fishing lures crafting. I think it may be military case for ammo or grenades but Im not sure. Very sturdy metal cast and riveted edges and corners. Wooden sides and a leather carrying handle.

Id think more for instruments with the compartments. A very nice,sturdy thing indeed. Id have a stand made for it and use it as an end table !

I would also agree with military and for instruments.

 

Measurements and a photo straight down into the box might get a more precise answer. Looks like whatever it held were used in pairs.

 

I would say if it was military it would have some markings on it. Looks like it held some expensive tools/instruments/optics? like others have said. Nice case.

 

One would expect to see markings, when military; but that isn't always like that.
Here is a cased German Carl Zeiss Scherenfernrohr 10 x 5, that served during two wars and never bared any military sign. That was my luck; the guy selling it at a car booth sale tought it was not military in any way, and it reflected in the price he was asking for it; a bargain!

 

Wow....good deal. Zeiss still makes the best stuff.
