Hello, first post on this forum,
We recently purchased this painting from Montreal flea market for the simple reason that it seemed attractive, but now, we're looking for some help on attribution and the artist!
There seem to have been a couple failed attempts at restoration over the years. It is oil on paper, pasted over Canvass, and is signed " Amélie N...." with four dots following the name. The frame is a very recent addition, and we took it off.
Can anyone help us clarify the mystery of this painting?

If you would be so kind, please edit your posting & choose "full image" for the pictures. Thank you.

Most likely this is a painting over a print.

Hello! Thanks for your response, that's also what we thought at the start, we had a friend who specializes in painting restorations take a look, he confirmed that it was in fact wholly painted and not a print, but had little other help for us. I can post a close up of the paint layer.

Usually, "oil paintings" on paper laid on canvas are chromolithographs under the top layer. This looks a lot like a Victorian chromo.

This is a painting by Amelie Munier Romilly. Similar?

No. No comparison in terms of quality of artistry.

Hello! Here's a few pictures showing the paint layers,
Anyone have any other ideas regarding the artist or age?

Well, it's Victorian. Mid-ish I'd think. And rather than a portrait, think it's a genre painting with a little moral depicted. Condition is rough. Doubtful you'll be able to identify Amélie N. Agree with above. Looks like a chromolithograph with overpainting.
