Komokwa, I'm going to show my ignorance by asking this question but . . .

Do you think that is a pin for the tartan over the shoulder or . . . . ??????

It's a common type of pin that was first used by hunters for good luck. The style became popular and is still being made and worn for luck.

If it is silver it should be hallmarked. I have had many of these through my hands and this one looks fairly modern.

I once sold one of those to an American buyer and sent it off, with the customs form marked 'old foot brooch'. It had not turned up weeks later so I refunded the buyer.

2 months later a Fish and Wildlife Agency person delivered it to the buyer. It seems they had read my hand written description as 'Owl foot brooch' and had spent a few weeks trying to determine what kind of owl, to see if was a protected species before someone identified it as a luncheon leftover.

Full marks to them for finally delivering it, no doubt at some cost, and to the buyer for telling me what happened and offering to pay again.

The hallmarks are just noticeable in the 2nd pic, ..as dots on the silver spine.
but to show that they are really present...here's a poor close up shot...for Ward Brothers , Glasgow, 1957 sterling.

If 1957 is fairly modern......so be it....but it's sure a lot older and finer than the new item Messilane found !!!

It ' s 3 1/2 inches to the tip of the claw and 1 1/2 wide at the 2 side claws.....so...a kilt pin.....but not very large .

    Still....nice find Messi !
