I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Wondering what your thoughts are on this umbrella stand. I'm not sure if I am going to keep it, but interesting in learning anything I can about it. Could anyone enlighten me as to about when these types of stands were crafted? It has some condition issues, but not terrible. I don't know whether to attempt to polish it, or would I just make a huge mess and regret it? Common or more hard to find? Thanks, as always, for your input.

This looks like copper. Polishing it may be a challenge, it seems that it was not clean long long time. If it was me I would try one small section and see if polishing works. I think it is very nice stand even as is.

They're usually brass but, of course, could be copper.

You know I have seen copper and brass wall plates with similar art work, it would go so well with your stand in some nice hallway, or corner. Simple, vintage, elegant, mmm..

Sort of a "colonial revival" thing? I have a kindling box with the same sort of construction and style of decoration. I don't know anything about it, but I've always thought it probably dated from the '50's, along with some andirons and fireplace tools that my mother had.

I think it was sort of hearking back to an imaginary golden age of Shakespearean tavern drinking. ;)
