Two rings: one cameo and one intaglio

The first ring is marked STERLING inside the band and appears to have a tiny coral cameo… Any way to tell if it is true coral based on my rather bad photos? As you can see in one photo, it does open. What might’ve been its purpose? It came to me completely black and I’ve cleaned it best I can. Oddly, the inside won’t clean up well.

The second is an intaglio of someone I presume to be Demeter/Ceres. Molded glass? The ring is not marked at all but surprisingly had absolutely no tarnish. I think I’ll be testing this one next time I get my kit out.

Any other comments or guesses as to the age of these two are welcome.

Can't tell you about the metals other than that the interior of the pill box must have a different finish. It may have looked like that from the beginning.

For the rest, you don't need telling. The little cameo is coral (the 'carving' of an artificial one would be better; makers of artificial ones seem to go for red); the intaglio is glass & Ceres.

 

I think the first ring was to hold solid perfume.

In the cartoon, UnderDog took a pill from a ring to transform from Shoeshine Boy into UnderDog. I remember as a kid wanting a cool ring like that so bad.
It was the best part of the show.

 

The ring gets called a poison ring, but I'd think it was for saccharin tablets. The coral looks like coral.

 

Thanks, everyone! I know the cameo ring is often called a “poison“ ring but I wondered if it had a true use. Any guesses as to age for these two rings? They were cheap, and I thought, somewhat interesting.

 

I'm going to venture late 60s/early 70s on the first one & 50s on the second.

 

I'd be thinking if it had a use it was ...unofficial one might say. Officially.(LOL) Peruvian marching powder?
