I got these two pitchers last summer for free at one of my neighbor's houses. They had a bunch of stuff for free on the side of the road. I decided to keep these two for myself because I really, really like them. I've seen ones similar to the one on the right before. I'm wondering about the one on the left. It is white glass, hand painted. I love it so much I can't stand it. I've never seen one like it. Can anyone help with age, maker, etc.?

They are both pretty, but the blue one is to die for!

Thank you - I'm glad you agree!!
The glass one is 5 1/2" tall, the other 7".

The one on the left is very similar in look to some German? Austrian? porcelain small pitchers and creamers I have at the store.

I'm attributing the ones I have as Germ., Aust., because mine have the painted European numbers on the bottoms.

Are you positive it is glass and not really white porcelain?
I'm asking, because the imperfection looks more ceramic than glass imperfection.

Well it looks like glass to me, and I've examined it carefully. But is there a way to tell for sure?

If you hold the glass one up to an incadenscent light do you see any fire or bright red glowing through it?

I agree with clutteredcloset the fracture line looks more like ceramic than glass to me. A close up or the dirt line around the base might be useful. Also the decoration strikes me as ceramic not glass but that is not a good way to decide.

Bohemian enamelled milk glass, 1920s or 30s. Nice.

Thanks Owned! That explains the color. It is fired after painting, right? That's why it looks different from most other hand painted glassware I've seen.
I'm assuming you can't fire most glassware?

Some was, some wasn't, and I'm trying to find a decent link on the differences, rather than spout on. ;) You can "fire" glass, in that you can sort of reheat it. Given the lack of wear on yours, it's not cold painted, anyhow.

I'd love it if you'd "spout on".
Have you ever seen this style of painting?

Not identical but similar: you often get birds and butterflies, for example. Have a google images search on bohemian painted millk glass and see what pops up!

I did - thanks. I didn't see anything with the same style, but that's okay. I love it.

The Pitcher on the right is Majolica. It's in the Majolica book.

tdebuys - when I held it up to the light I could see a white glow - no fire.
fenton - thanks. That one has a crack but I'm keeping it anyway.

left one looks Bauhaus-influenced with that ugly handle, right one could be for cocoa by its form

Have we decided the pitcher on the left is or isn't glass?

With that whatzit in the bottom inside, I have a lot of trouble calling it glass. It looks like a flaw the material has crawled away from before firing.

Here is a piece of Carlsbad porcelain. Notice the airbrush type of background like yours. Also note the fine brown stem lines.

I'm not saying your is Carlsbad, as that porcelain was copied as well. Although yours is nicely painted it is not painted as nice as Carlsbad.

Here is another example of what I consider to be an attempt at Bristol style painting on porcelain. Note the last picture and the flaw in the spout.
