i picked both these up today at a flea market. The vase is an unusual color for the spongeware decoration. I'm thinking the little compote might be English. The color on the bottom section is flambé glaze. I can see apart owl mark through the drill hole on the base, it might say Johnson or ????son. Both pieces measure around 6" tall. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Your first piece is a piece of California pottery. Specifically Cleminson's pottery

    You're welcome.
There are Cleminson's collectors. Although the California pottery has quieted down some in the last couple of years.

    Quieted down some....understatement.:(
I would never have guessed Cleminson's looking at that piece.

Hi Mr2Real - I'm leaning towards Burley Winter on the second vase. It looks like a vellum glaze.
Brush McCoy is another possibility but I'd expect to see a number on the bottom if it was one of theirs. Don

I think the second one is probably Peters and Reed. It does bear similarity to both the Brush McCoy and the Burley Winter but is not quite right for either. While the glaze does not scream P&R, the form and bottom do.
