    I appreciate that I am probably in the wrong forum; but I couldn't find one more appropriate.

    I think it is rather nice, although it isn't varnished, so I doubt that it is waterproof. There is a pivot point in the centre of the base, and the vase rocks all round. This might be the result of a deposit rather than a function of the lathe work.

    Height: 24 cm
    Largest diameter: 18 cm
    Weight: 740 g Surprisingly light, I thought.

    Any ideas on age? Modern or ancient? Art Nouveau or of the style? What is the wood? There may be a signature on the edge of the base; but I cannot make it out.

    Thank you.

    My guess would be Asia or India? Looks like a tropical wood.

    A lot of turned wood vases originally came with a cylinder shaped glass insert to make them usable.

    I have several packed away. From a huge burl wood vase to miniature black walnut.

    Brian does, he is always polite. He probably hasn't had time yet.

    Many newbies/onetimers don't though.:(

    @Matahari
    I have been contemplating putting a small amount of water in the vase to test your "non varnished waterproof wood" concept; but have decided to wait until @komokwa tries out his duck in the bath tub.

    @Matahari
    My mummy and daddy taught me say please and thank you, when I was a little boy, and I have not forgotten that in more than 80+ years.

    My thank you to you all for your suggestions. A little late, but my computer is on its last legs. Sometime keyboard in mute, or produces rubbish, and I cannot even enter my password to open the computer.

    So far today it is fine, so thank you, and a special thank you to @Any Jewelry for protecting my integrity.
