Trying to identify mark on majolica 9" plate - blue & brown, but fuzzy

Does anyone recognize the mark on this plate? It is under the glaze, and has a blue and brown layer (maybe misaligned). There's an impressed mark there too, but also difficult to make out, maybe a 2-digit number (it's located where the apparent "e" in the blue mark is). The plate is 9 inches in diameter. Thanks! ... I have no idea about your plate but I did want to let you know that I did look and what I found. I have a single book on Majolica so not only does that not make me an expert it actually can muddy the issue when you don't find what you're looking for.

Anyway....it shows no mark that looks similar to yours. There is a 9" plate that looks similar in pattern though very different color palate but it gives no maker. It does however call it a geranium plate so perhaps that might be a useful search term.

The only maker that they show with a celadon back that your plate seems to have (at least on my monitor) is Holdcroft however they show an impressed mark. That said, they don't show the backs of anything other than in the marks section so that means close to nothing and frankly the color of your plate reminds me of some recent Asian things.

Sorry that isn't any help I know but I did want to mention the geranium thing.

Um, dunno if it's really majolica which is tin-glazed earthenware. The glaze on isn't shiny like the English majolica of the 19th c. Maybe a mold from a majolica plate that they resurrected and put a modern glaze and colours on it. Just guessing.

Your plate presents a bit of difficulty. It's nearly impossible to definitively ID majolica from photos--more so in some cases than others. I suspect that your plate is a more recent Chinese piece. The pattern is based on an old English pattern that I run across with some frequency in Victorian Greenware, a precursor to Victorian majolica that continued to be popular even after Victorian majolica made its debut. While the pattern is obviously based on the earlier English one, it is not exact. If you'd like to compare, there's a photo of a greenware example in Bockol's book, Victorian Majolica on page 128. Nor have I ever seen the pattern done in anything other than solid green or solid cream. In addition, the base looks more modern to me than what I see on older pieces. The lack of a defined table-rim isn't something I usually see on old pieces.

It's still quite a pretty plate, though, and I would think it should sell well as a decorative item.

 

Oh god. I should have recognised H&K, I've got LOADS of the stuff! Mostly the poor man's Moorcroft.
