I picked up two of these at a recent estate sale:

I have only found two copies of it on the market - both sold.

    Anyone know about maps??

I emailed both sites that had sold a copy.

Fascinating. 1945. I wonder how many of those languages are dead now.

Yes - that's an interesting but sad thing to think about Debora.

Same author, date and subtitle. But not a actual book - copy of the map and what ever else came with it.

I believe that is a reference to the map itself. It was created by Verne Ray, using information from the people cited.

You're right, Book. The Amazon and Abe books links take you to listings for the map.

As you know, you can search Google books, but they actually search anything published in print I believe.

It is page 40 of something, though.

Ah - so it is. I'll have to research that more.
It could be a collection of his maps, it could be part of a study, it could be from an atlas, it could be from a lot of things.

I see, looking at the whole map, the 40 is a line of longitude or such.

I got a reply to one of my emails:

    Good afternoon ,

Thanks very much for your message to my website! I’m familiar with the Tribal and Linguistic Map of South America, created by the prominent linguist Verne Ray. It’s an amazing map, but the collecting market for such a piece is relatively limited. Assuming it’s the same as the copy that I sold previously on my website, I would estimate a ballpark retail value of between $150 and $200.

If you’d like to sell the map, or put it up for consignment, I’d be happy to discuss terms further. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope this information is helpful, and thanks for browsing my website!

    Best,

    @Bakersgma - um, that 40 is the 40th Meridian.

    Aren't we the geography whizzes?
