Treen candlesticks - any idea how old and where from?

I bought these weeks ago. There are a pair of them and they were made in two pieces and apparently meant to come apart for storage.

 

with the base being that wide I'd say made from two different pieces of wood...nothing to do with storage.....more that there would be a large waste of wood it the stick was turned from a block as large as the base....
imho...

 

That doesn't surprise me. I'm still wondering whodunnit, or at least wheredunnit. The base doesn't look like someone chopped it apart with a saw.

 

That dark wood looks like some stuff from the Philippines.

 

That's possible. They're heavy as heck too, if that helps. Some kind of mahogany?

They do indeed. I think they were also a whopping $2, so even if they're not old/rare/valuable I'm out a bottled water.

If you're buying it out somewhere, that's the going rate. I generally drink tap water, so I have money for treen.

 

African ebony in my book. I've some old carvings my godfather bought me years back.

 

I should have thought of that, but I've never seen a piece of West African-turned wood. Plenty of carvings, but nothing mechanical.

 

Some of my bits are turned: I think they use or used those foot driven thingummies.

 

Old school, in other words. Hmmmm - those might make a nice Christmas present for someone local.

 

Exactly. And they might indeed, they're good things.

 

One of my pastors is into West African, and East African for that matter, art. I always give all three gentlemen some sort of cool/fun/wacky gift and these fit the bill. As cool anyway.
