Anyway the reason for me going was this Hoshiarpur table being sold near me from a auction house that isn't online. My question is what does it say? Any help would be truly appreciated, the table is Sheesham with ivory and ebony inlay c 1860.

    Beautiful table.
The only word I recognize is الله or Allah, which appears three times, so I assume it is a religious Islamic text. It could be in Arabic or in Urdu, but more likely the former.
I would ask in your local mosque.

You could check our 'translator thread' for members who translate Arabic. But I believe none of them have been around for a while, so your local mosque is the better option.

You are a Superstar Any, thank you, I knew you would be able to help :) I am going to restore this table, it's seen better days but no one in the auction knew what it was, even the auctioneer said after the auction had finished he thought it was Egyptian 1960's lol needless to say I didn't pay it's worth, there were many dealers who were surprised I kept on bidding and I was shocked they stopped bidding at such an early stage, I had 10x a larger budget than I needed and I was thinking I would pay half to a third it's retail value.
This is a 2010 Chirstie's auction link for the same type table

    :joyful:
You did very well, and I'm sure you can restore it to its former glory.
I prefer yours to the one on Christie's, I like the text.

I don't know if this text will hold it back or help? I suppose what it says will determine that, BTW I've asked a local mosque on facebook if they can translate. It's the only Hoshiarpur I've ever seen with writing on and once the restoration is complete it will look fantastic, it's not the first Hoshiarpur table I've done, this will be my third so I'm confident that I can pull it off.

    Amazing restoration work, raver.
    So am I.:)
I think it will help. Some people will buy it because of the meaning, others because of the esthetic of the script.
Wil you let us know what they say?

Yes, as soon as they get back to me. It's a small local place so I don't know how often they check FB, BTW those tables I've done look a lot better in real life, because I lacquered them (French polish) and I was keeping them in the house I didn't take the shine off so they reflect too much light and don't look antique enough but both were in a bad state, missing inlays and very tired looking before.

Huh. I've learned 2 new somethings today on the fora! Well, I happen to have a hoshiarpur table that my grandmother bought as well as a similar designed 3 tier server. The table is not in good condition, and I'm sure it was something made in India, so whether it is a genuine hoshiarpur table or just made in the style of, I dunno. My grandmother was impressed by Nehru, so I think the few Indian made things she had were from that period.

Many women were, my grandmother and mother too.
My husband actually looked like Nehru, but with more hair.;) Even as a little boy, because he was called 'the little pandit'.

If you post photos of the questioned Hoshiarpur items then I can tell you (hopefully) if they are antique, I suspect they were made in Hoshiarpur but if after 1947 plastic was used instead of ivory, like it or not, ivory is worth more because it's easily dateable so a close up on the white inlay would help as the patterns didn't change much over the years. If it is early, it could be worth a lot as this wear is getting quite sort after.

It does, I hope to learn more as the post on my friends FB page asking about the translation has drawn quite a lot of attention.

I've never noticed if it was ivory or not. I'll see if I can get a photo. I put a tablecloth on it because of it's rough shape.

Here are some photos of my table. I think the inlay is plastic.

It's difficult to tell if ivory or plastic but clearly Hoshiarpur, get a pin red hot and see if it makes of hole in the inlay (please do it in a place where it won't show) if it goes in it's plastic.

This is clearly pre 1947 and will be ivory inlay, I bet the label on the back says "made in British India" or something like that. This is late Hoshiarpur and a nice item.
