These photos were loose at a recent auction and there is nothing else to go on but the photos and notes to back. Wont have access to military databases until tomorrow at earliest but would be interesting to see if there is a story here and there is a New York link . Any help gratefully accepted!
No aid at all but he appears to be a career Navy man - well traveled! Calcutta Rowing Club, located in Kolkata, India, was founded in 1858 and is one of the oldest rowing clubs of its kind outside the United Kingdom. They have a website, but no access to a past members roster.
Royal Navy Transport Service. The photo was perhaps taken in New York after arrival in 1918 WWI , the ship he was on was probably a troop carrier returning US troops for R&R and bringing others back on the return. My Dad did a similar thing, he was among 6000 military passengers on the Queen Mary in WWII, US, Canadian, British and Polish, heading for NY for R&R, training, medical discharge etc. He had his photo taken in Jack Dempsey`s Restaurant, before heading up to Nova Scotia to collect a new destroyer.
I should visit this Militaria forum more often. I love old photos, and tend to look for the posts about them in other forums here. Did you find more information about him yet, rhiwfield? You mentioned that you have access to military databases.
He was awarded a WW1 medal (not got full details) and was an overseer in British Guiana (sailed to Georgetown) later going to Calcutta as an accountant before returning to UK, getting married during WWII. Trail went cold then.
