I found a sextant at an estate sale and I'm wondering if it is a replica or if it is real and how much it is worth either way. Has a marking on the bottom that says " Titanic
emergency equipment please do not remove sextant from lifeboats"

Can post or send pictures once I figure out how to do so. THANK YOU!

I guess you didn't catch the part where I said I'm looking for the value either way. Keep your REMOVED comments to yourself

We don`t allow such comments on here, behave or you will be banned

    Hi Repoo7,
Terry did not say that with a nasty tone just facts. Your nasty reply is not really nice. We are a friendly bunch here and no one likes nasty replies.

I was looking forward to an interesting discussion about antique nautical equipment. It seems I walked into a whirlpool of political promises...

I just got here and forgive whatever was done to rock the lifeboat. Please post a pic of the item and we can comment, the marking on it is certainly BS but we can tell you if it is a genuine usable sextant or not,

    Hi,
I am still shocked by the OP comments towards Terry. Thank goodness I do not see many nasty comments here, I thought I was back on the eBay boards.

I missed what was deleted. Obviously way out of line, as I have not seen this kind of response from the board before.

However I would like to take this moment to comment on something I have seen from a few board members.

Many new people who come here asking for help, have no idea what they have or are looking at. More times than not, what a new member has is not necessarily an unique item of high value.
More times their items are of general commonality that those of us who are in the business have seen over and over. But you have to remember the new member doesn't necessarily know this.

I am not singling out Terry, but since his is the response that set the OP off, I will use it.
Ok so the OP is excited as he thinks he has found something highly unusual and of high value if not historical value.
Without even seeing the item, Terry's remark dismisses the whole query. Maybe this item is commonly known to be a fake. But the OP new to the business doesn't know this, and the remark given doesn't explain anything. Instead it was probably seen as an insult. I don't know what he replied, but his buttons were obviously pushed.

I have seen other queries where new people start a thread about something and the first remark is made to be a funny about the OPs item, basically shutting down any further comment that might have helped the OP understand what they have. Or they read the first reply and don't bother to come back to see that others have actually answered their question with facts.

I think that maybe we should take a look at who is posting, and if it is a new member, put yourself into their shoes. Remember what it is like to post in a new forum not knowing anything. We need to encourage further participation from new members, not shut them out with what they might interpret as a rude response to what they think is a legitimate question.

While I agree with most of what you said, cluttered closet, what he called Terry was a crude name for a penis, and that is not acceptable.

However something is interpreted that type of response is rude, sick and uncalled for.

I wondered what he called Terry as I didn't see it.

On the forums I admin that is an automatic ban, Its in the rules.

After reading this tread I highly doubt that the OP will ever show his face here again.......
& seeing as how this thread is now only a commentary on the behavior of it's members , new and old, & is stuck in Metalware where not everyone involved comes to look....I'll suggest that a MOD close this thread, & Clutter start a new thread titled ...."Board Behavior " , a friendly guide .

That said, @ Clutter......while your post is full of good ideas and thoughts....

THIS....." However I would like to take this moment to comment on something I have seen from a few board members."
    ......has absolutely no place there.
So , unless you're going to name names so we all know whom you're talking about , leave that part out !
& we can hold a general discussion on this subject....without pointing fingers at any members in particular.......

    INHO....

I don't want to point fingers as I value everyone's opinion.
However, when the first comments to a new member are meant to be funny and the new member who may or may not have read the board previously, so may not know the various personalities, then they may in fact take offense.

My point was that the OP was new. Came to our board to ask what they thought was a relevant question. The first answer did not give any help with why it was a "fantasy" piece.

That being said, someone has contacted me with the response from the OP and it was indeed very rude and disrespectful.

In this instance, I think errors were made on both sides.
