I found these at a local thrift store today. when I googled Carlos Dias (is that the name in signature?) I saw some links for a listed artist so I bought them; I figured for $29 each even if it's not a known artist or nice paintings then the frames were worth that much.

So can anyone tell me how I did? Who is the artist? Are the paintings well done or a Sunday painter?

    They measure 31" x 38" with frames.

PS - I also got a large Morris Katz painting (world's fastest painter - I saw him on the Johnny Carson or David Letterman show as a kid!) for $9.99; so that one should also help balance budget in regards to today's expenses!
    Thanks all!

If it's Jewish, sure could. Lots of Spanish and Portuguese Jews made a run for the Netherlands at one point. Their descendants still have their original surnames by and large.

No one knows who the artist is?
So, I'm guessing it's not a known artist?

The morris Katz painting there are tons of his works out there but prices are every where on ebay. Not really high value. Carlos Diaz I don't think it's the same one in the link above but not totally for sure.

I don't know if the Diaz paintings are Dutch, but the first landscape and sky certainly look Dutch.
Those trees and low farm buildings are seen a lot in my part of the Netherlands, the south. We have many fields surrounded by trees like that, one field after another, creating an intimate feel, almost like agricultural living rooms.;) The landscape was created in pre-historic times, and recently received the status of 'national landscape'. That painting is quite attractive.
The second one is very amateur imo. He should stick to painting people in the distance.
I agree, we have a Sephardic community who found a safe haven here in the Netherlands, but Carlos is not a first name I would expect among them. The Sephardic name Diaz is mostly written the Portuguese way, with an s, and is usually together with another name, eg Lopes-Dias.
'Our' most famous Sephardi was the brilliant philosopher Spinoza.

A Dutch Carlos Diaz would probably be first or second generation Spanish. Many came over in the 60s to find work here and stayed.
My Flamenco dance lessons were in one of the Spanish community centres in our town.:)

There are a LOT of works by a VARIETY of people all named Carlos Diaz.

Your guy has a fairly distinct signature. I found one other one, and this person says he's Cuban. I think that's a WAG because of the flame tree.

Although waitaminnit, the seller got his in Coral Gables... and you're in...

It's possible your guy just found a frame that was made in Holland and that he never left Florida (or maybe Cuba, even).

I admit, I do wonder if these were removed from the original stretchers... it's a pretty crap job of attaching the canvas.

Oh, and the ebay frame is from Holland, too.

The seller of this piece (and he has more than one): states: "THIS OLD OIL IS FROM CUBA AND ARRIVE TO MY SELF BY MY BROTHER THAT STILL LIVES IN CUBA AND IS AN ART DEALER. CARLOS DIAZ IS A CUBAN ARTIST FROM THE LAST MIDCENTURY"

Another with the sloppy canvas attachment to stretchers, so maybe Carlos was just in a hurry to get on with more painting!

The artist is Cuban born. Carlos Diaz is the correct spelling. His signature is very distinctive. My neighbor has 2 of his paintings. I believe he passed away in 2012. The artist also has a collection of religious paintings. To my knowledge his artwork isn't worth a lot of money. His prints usually sell from $15 to $40. My neighbor believes a few of his paintings are worth a few hundred dollars if not more. Your painting is lovely.
