These were the only half decent art pieces I saw today at a local thrift store - at first glance I thought they were the same name (a 2nd closer look squashed that idea!).
The first is from the 1950's and is signed A. Mark Datz & googling his name the first link I saw was to one of his pieces in the Smithsonian American Art Museum - and the 2nd was to the Whitney Museum of American Art (even though it says he's from Russia)!
Has anyone heard of him? Can anyone tell me what I have - a drawing? a print? a painting? My first thought was a drawing because some of the people (on right side) have half their face in red (as well as long funny nose & other unusual looks).
Did I hit a home run with this one?!

The 2nd one is a artist proof by a modest artist named J. C . Litz - there is a personal note on it thanking someone for liking his work & that is signed James Charles Litz. Googling him I found his work described as 'Primitive - Naive' style.

Hoping someone can tell me more about my Datz piece and hoping you'all like the Litz cafe (with the J.C. Litz fan club jacket, the J.C. Litz trucking jacket + Dr. J.C. Litz with his doctor's bag - like I said; a modest artist!) Enjoy!

Here is the rest of the Litz A/P:
PS - I know a print isn't as valuable as a painting - but isn't an artist proof more valuable?

I made a joke about Litz being a modest artist - but I found these institutions & celebrities who collected his art; so maybe he deserves to brag a little!

Permanent displays: The National and International Vietnam Veterans War Art Museum, Chicago, IL; the American Folk Art Museum, NYC; the President Bush Library, Houston, TX; Museé D'Art Naïf de l'lle De France; the International Folk Art Museum, La Jolla, CA; and the James Fennimore Coopers Museum, Cooperstown, NY.

Private Collections: Jackie Gleason (deceased); Roy Rogers (deceased); the Flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya (deceased); opera singer Patrice Munsel, cellist Lynn Harrell, and Bill Cosby.

Can anyone tell if the Datz is a painting? Or maybe a drawing?
    Thanks!

The Datz is almost certainly drawn in ink, maybe with a little watercolor. It’s hard to see. Datz was married into my mom’s family so I know a bit about him. I’m curious where the thrift shop is where you found it.

Thanks for the information - all I'll say on the thrift store is it's somewhere in Miami!

Artists proofs are generally worth the same as, but not more than, prints from the regular edition. Dedicated works are less attractive to collectors unless they are dedicated to someone infinitely more famous than Sheila and Marvin Kadish.
