However at first I thought is was some kind of print (it’s also framed with glass) I find it very captivating. Still trying to find the artist. It’s 40 x 29cm. Your thoughts please. Thank you and keep well.

That has the look of a serigraph.

Thanks for the comment. Will look into that. I don’t know the term serigraph.

Framed very attractively too. Serigraph is a fancy word for silk screen print and it does look like it might be.

Serigraphs are popularly called 'silk screen prints'. They feature areas of flat color with detectable, very even edges, and sometimes the texture of the screen remains visible. I agree this looks like one, but I see enough variation and what looks like brushwork to make it look like a painting to me, probably gouache, which is an opaque watercolor medium.

It is quite skilfully executed - the balance of the red doorway in the shadows with the red boat edges in sunlight on the other side indicates someone with considerable experience in composition.

My first impression of the first pic was that it was a photograph. nicely done.

Same. It may be a manipulated photograph, altered and painted on when the silk screen was made. I do think this is a silk screened print.
Please let us know what you find when you open it up! :)

My first thought was that it had something paint by number-ish about it. Serigraph would be the "ish".

I don't deny that it could be a painting. If it is, it was done by someone who likes the broad sweeps of relatively uniform color that can be an indicator of a serigraph.

This is a serigraph by Canadian artist Robert Pilot:

Thank you. I appreciate the comment and information.I now read about about serigraphs (very interesting) I again looked at the artwork closely and also with a magnifying glass. I also see traces of paint, texture variation and brushstrokes.

I also looked at other examples of gouache paintings and do think (in my humble opinion) that you are correct. Some other gouache painting really has a very similar look and ‘feel’ to me. Thanks again

Thanks for the reply. The colours used also made me think of a ‘Paint by numbers’ thing.

Nice example. Thank you for commenting. I certainly see why a serigraph is a consideration.

I’m wondering whether it might be a reproduction of an E.J. Hughes.

A most interesting comment. Thanks. The composition, style and subject matter certainly looks very similar to EJ Hughes (I think with my limited knowledge ) But the signature doesn’t? So what would the point be I wonder? Anyway great comment!
