I've had this for a while; I found it in a thrift store, but it is so unusual I never listed it for sale. But I'm running out of space so I thought I'd ask your opinion of it?
It made me think of Modigliani?
    Thanks all!

Don't you wish it was Modigliani... but no. This is rank amateur. Most of the "Modigliani" out there is fake. This one does not do it well.

Not Modigliani, but a similarly stylized portrait.

Looking at one in link above - or any of his works - it's hard to say someone else's is bad!

If you're running out of space, you might become try to become a bit more discerning in what you buy. Just because it's real paint doesn't necessarily mean it's real art.

However, you do say you manage to sell this stuff profitably, so more power to you!

Perhaps it was done without intent to deceive. Just someone of lesser skills trying their hand at copying an available image. Consider...

You'll notice his quick underpainting first (the black lines around the face and hands-he's sketching out the composition 'all prima',probably working on raw un-gessoed raw canvas/linen/board.Then (in the actual Modigliani) he begins broadly laying in the color and form.Find the original online-one you can zoom in on and study how many colors are in the jacket, how much texture, hue and energy is in the so-called 'blank wall' behind the subject (Chaim Soutine). Study great artists work, zoom in,observe-it's like a gym class for your eyeballs and will aid you in deciding what to buy.

They used to allow people to set up in galleries and copy master works. A neighbor, years ago, had her walls full of paintings her artist mother had copied from the various galleries. (Washington DC suburbs so probably the National Gallery of Art among them). No idea if they let people do that anymore.

I don't know about museums, but I was surprised in 1977 when going to the King Tut exhibition, no one could bring their cameras in. It may have been the first large public event I'd ever attended where no photographs were allowed!
I did a quick sketch on a small pad of a few of the Egyptian symbols and items, then was hurried along by the usher guard, as the crowd line was long. Good times, late '70s! :)

Even I copied a Modigliani for course work in my early years at an art university.
Every student had to select one artist's work to copy. I didn't care for that assignment.

Yup, back in the 70s a friend and I often spent lovely days at galleries in DC, it was so near. There used to be people set up and painting though never more than a few at a time so we assumed you needed special permission or some level of competence.

Yep-Student Study OR definitely one of the most inept forgeries in history.Did anyone see pics of some of the disastrous 'restorations' some of the older village ladies did in ancient Spanish (French) Churches. The town Priest seemed pretty happy with work (IT WAS FREE).

We have several threads on those 'restorations'. There was also one done by a furniture upholsterer, also in Spain I believe.

Yow-Glad the Priests are trying to save a few bucks, but maybe next time The Vatican could kick in $5 or $10 ?
