Featured This is a resin fake, right?

Found this today. I'm thinking it's hand-carved, based on the fact that the details in the repeating designs on the side have slight variations from one to the next.

I've searched for bubbles and those cross-lines so common on recent resin pieces, but don't see any.

The designs are too crisp, the bottom is not worn enough, and the inside is too pristine for this to be real cinnabar.... right?

Kind of, it's not really a fake as it isn't trying to fool anyone. It's more of a reproduction, or decorative piece in the style of the antiques.

Seconded. If it fakes anyone out, it's by accident. Nice little box.

 

Cinnabar is no longer used because of its toxicity, so they turned to artificial 'cinnabar lacquer' instead.
It is a fairly recent, honest box, with no intention to fake, as the others said.

You can recognize real cinnabar lacquer by the layers you see when you look at the carved parts (cross section).
