Could it be from Knights Templar the cross on the back was a formee pattee cross. They used that form in the 1500's i think. How long have pieces been plated in silver?

No, it is not from the Knights Templar, many Christian groups used that cross.
I think they are meant to be cranes or storks.;)

I know the crane is an important symbol to the Alevites, a Turkish syncretic religious group. The lion is also one of their symbols but as far as I know they don't use a cross symbol.
Syncretic means they embrace elements of different faiths.

    Alevite crane:

Looked since I read post and none even close to the design of Lion of Judah or any with maltese cross unless its called something else. Very strange are the animals upside down sacrificed animals. Some look like Tasmanian Tigers.

I see what you mean. I think the stripes are meant to be ribs. They look like hunting dogs, they also have collars.
