I have four sterling table spoons by Theodore B. Starr. According to Wikipedia, Theodore B. Starr founded a company of silversmiths in 1862, and in 1864 the company became Starr and Marcus. In 1877, it became Theodore B. Starr, and lasted until 1923, after having been bought by Reed & Barton in 1918. Based on the appearance of these markings, is it possible to determine when they were made?

Also, I hate to ask, but as a practical matter, are they more valuable based on age and maker, or for melt value?

Does anyone have any thoughts about the date of these spoons, either based on the style or the marks?

They were most likely just the retailer, and it's a classic 'Shell' pattern, several firms issued it as a sterling line pattern right around 1890 - might just be your pic, but the shell looks a bit elongated, which was typical of Durgin's version, and they did supply Starr, but it could just as easily have been from some anonymous jobber...

Thanks, I was not sure if they were by Starr, or a supplier. I'll look up Durgin and see what I can learn. It seems there is nothing really remarkable about these, but they are useful!
