Hello everyone! I am just finishing up a project that I am very excited about. So I joined this forum, so I can share the story and pictures with people who may appreciate it:)

So this is what's going on. A very close friend of mine is a very talented wood worker, and also very creative. Two years ago he Acquired some wood from an old train station that had been taken apart in the early 1980's.
The station was built in 1860.

He talked about building a large hutch for my house, using two narrow tall doors as the end panels for the hutch.

The wood is different colours of crackled vintage paint. Yet I couldn't quite picture what he was visualizing.

Then on December 15th he called me up and said he was going to start the project.

With our Christmas budget spent, it may not have been the best time. But I didn't want to miss my opportunity knowing that his work is second to none in my opinion. So I gave him the go ahead, and spent a lot of time in the followIng week hanging out with him and helping with the project in his shop.

    Before I go further.

Is this an appropriate place to showcase such a piece?

The hutch itself is not an antique, but the materials are

    Thankyou:)

Welcome Gillespie, I'm pretty new here myself, but have found "the regulars" a very hospitable group. I'm really looking forward to seeing this project.

We have a thread in the general section called Tales from the Hoard where people regularly show repurposed furniture. That said, we are not sticklers for protocol here so post away in this thread you have created. We would love to see this project.

I'll start off with a picture of the doors.
The interior side of the doors are a blue/green colour. The exterior side is a common Canadian national railroad red.
I will also attach a photo of a window frame, that he sheeted in with narrow tongue and groove boards.
He said it would be centered in the back panel of the hutch, and in all honesty I was a bit skeptical initially of how this would look.
Also a image of a neat cast piece that allowed you to keep one of the doors shut if just opening one door.
It was mounted at the top of the door.

Also attached are images of the black and white base board/ crown moulding.

I was amazed at the quality of the 156 year old wood seen in a cross section when cut.

Hopefully the pictures upload, this will be my first attempt :)

    My photos are to large!!
Trying to figure out a solution now, sorry I suck at this stuff!

Glad to see the interest! I'll figure it out :)

    It worked!

FYI - Members on phones have trouble with the "thumbnail" versions of pictures. You could edit your post by changing from thumbnail to Full Image and they would show up right in your post.

In the next pics you can see the boards used as shelves, they are a full 18" wide.

Stair case spindles used as vertical shelf supports.

Spindles also used in the stiles/ dividers between to cabinet doors. And the base board on.

The most frusturating part of the build was the projects size. His shop isn't big enough for this type of stuff really.
So it was tight!! Makeing takeing good pics difficult. Unable to get far enough away from the hutch.

As you can see in one pic, we have it semi stood up just to get a full pic.

Unfortunately 3/4" plywood was used to build the base and top box that the doors were attached to squaring up the doors/ hutch.

Once done zero plywood is visible. All covered with old wood.

Also, above the cabinets a exterior window sill caseing was used.

Then we were onto cabinet doors.
He built the frame from the same white baseboard we were going to use for crown moulding.
Then we filled the interior with this strange 1/4" plywood with a stretch steel type pattern pressed into it.
Not sure if it's vintage, but it was found with all the train station wood.
Anyone know or seen it before?

I think it added a nice touch.

Next pics are of the hutch at home in my messy garage!
So again, not great pics... sorry.
    But a bit more info.

Old quarter round moulding from the station used as noseing on upper two shelfs.

Backside of hutch sheeted in with 7inch red boards that were exterior boards on the ole station.

A matching red 4inch board running up the face of the door edge.

Crown moulding installed and underside of hutch top sheeted in with 3.5inch white tongue and groove boards.

The 4 white hutch doors are hung with piano hinge. And knobs cut from the same spindles used in the rest of the hutch.

That's 'expanded metal' and used for many things and in many patterns and in many thicknesses.
It is handy for non-slip use and cheap enough to be replaced when necessary.
It's used for air registers and security and more.
Would certainly be much around a train station.

I think it's looking great! A fabrication project right up my alley.

It looks like expanded metal, but it's wood!

Thanks for the positive feed back folks

Ah! Ok, someone created that pattern in wood for some reason then.

    Yes sir! It's weird stuff.

I have just been scrubbing away at it, and putting on some minwax spar varnish. "Satin finish"

Kind of a shame I know.. but it's technically a new piece of furniture now.
And I want to keep the led paint out of my kids cheerios haha

From base board to crown its 94" tall.

should look so much better once it's finished and moved into the house!

Dark dirty garage pics don't do it any justice.
