Featured The Source of the River or Clocked to the Max (im)

No questions, no problems, just....happiness!

This piece is from Paris ca. 1910, and it's a mixture of the Art Nouveau and Classical Revival styles. There are two allegorical figures with a clock behind them; one figure is tipping over a water jar and guiding it as it flows out and away; the other is just hanging out amongst the reeds and cattails.

The bronze and rouge marble portion is by Geo. Maxim. The clock movement is by Japy Freres. The nameplate on the front says "Source Riviere" and below "par Georges Maxim." He is noted as a bronze sculptor born in 1885, died (I think) in 1940, perhaps in WW II. The whole piece weighs 40-50 pounds U.S.

I don't have any issues or questions about it. Just delighted and wanted to share it with my antiquer pals.

Would it originally have been gilded?

Not in this case. The present patina would have been applied at the time of casting, and that’s what we see now.

 

That's really quite pretty. Interestingly, most of his work to be found on the internet is in a pure Art Deco style. And he was quite fond of those horizontal bases. Yours would be a quite early piece for him then.
